ADVANTAGES OF STUDYING IN THE USA

What makes it so special? Isn't it just a normal course of study? Absolutely wrong! Learn about the benefits of going to college here.

FIND WHAT SUITS YOU

A college degree takes on average four years. In the first two years you can take general introductory courses that are not specified for your degree. This gives you the opportunity to get to know other departments better before you specialize in one area.

NO NC

The US is known as the land of opportunity. It is the same in studies. You can choose any course without having to worry about an NC. This means that you can even study subjects for which you are not admitted in your home country. This gives you the opportunity to develop freely.

PERFECT THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

If you are currently having difficulties with the English language, this is normal and not a problem at all. Few international students begin their studies with fully trained language skills. The good thing is, after your studies you won't have any more problems with English. Not only is this beneficial for you, but it also looks extremely good on an application.

DIVERSITY

A special feature of the college course is the diversity. Not only do you have the opportunity to choose any course of study, you also have the choice to study at the most beautiful places in the world. On the beach in California or Florida, in the Nevada desert, under the New York skyline, next to the mountains of Colorado, in the warm south of Arizona or in a quiet area like the Midwest. As a student-athlete you will also travel a lot and have extra opportunities to explore the diverse country of the USA.

PLEASANT COURSE SIZE

Another advantage of studying at college is that you don't have overcrowded lecture halls in which you literally have to fight for your place. The course size is always comfortable, so you can often even form a personal relationship with the professors. However, this can be different from university to university, depending on how many students are at the college.

A REAL SCHOOL DEGREE IS ALSO ENOUGH (Germany only)

A big advantage is that you don't need a high school diploma to study in the USA. Here you can start your studies with a secondary school certificate. For many students who would like to study but are not admitted in Germany with a secondary school leaving certificate, this is the ideal opportunity!

IDEALLY COMBINING STUDIES AND SPORT

An absolute specialty in the American school system is the ideal combination of sport and studies. Nowhere in the world do you have the opportunity to do high-quality sport and complete a full bachelor's degree (and get paid for it). Your schedule is tailored to your training so that you miss as few lessons as possible. In America, attendance is compulsory, but there are occasions where you will miss classes because of sporting events. However, as a student-athlete you have some privileges and are automatically excused. Since Covid-19, Zoom has become a real option for American universities. In addition to the classic on-site courses, many professors also offer parallel zoom courses, so that you have the opportunity to take part in the lessons from home or from an away trip.  So, your grades are not endangered by sport, on the contrary, they are protected. You have to keep a certain GPA in order to remain eligible to play. This means that your coaches, but also your professors, attach great importance to your academic achievements and support you to pass your courses.

WHAT DOES A COLLEGE DEGREE LOOK LIKE?

A bachelor's degree usually consists of four years:  Freshmen year, Sophomore year, Junior year and Senior year. In your freshmen year you usually have general introductory courses in various specialist areas. Such courses can also occur in your sophomore year. Mostly however, the courses in your second year will be a little more specific to your degree. On average, the first two years are pretty easy and only in your last two years does the material get heavier. It must be mentioned that international students, especially Europeans, rarely have problems studying in America. However your studies can always be adapted to your personal situation. After your bachelor's degree, you have the option of adding a two-year master’s degree.

Unlike in Europe, you get homework every week in the USA. These are usually not very difficult, but must be done in a timely manner. Your homework will be graded and will contribute part of your final grade. The exam phase can differ from university to university, but also from course to course. Most of the time you have  one exam in the middle of the semester and another at the end of the semester. In some courses you only have one exam or even more than two. Often you don't have an exam at all, but instead have weekly tests that consist of around 10 questions. A big advantage is that  under normal circumstances the vacation is yours. This means as soon as you have no more lessons, the course is over and you don't have to do anything.
